Computers, desks and chairs have become integral part of our lives and so the back pain and neck pain. Many a times we all would have experienced back pain. Most of the times, it subsides. But what makes the back pain originate when we sit for long hours?
It has been proposed that sitting increase the stress on back muscles and intervertebral discs. Non activity of muscles lead to spasms. Wrong postures lead to undue stress over the ligaments and joints of spine.
With all this in view, concept of ergonomics plays an important role in prevention of back pain. Following should be followed:
- Avoid sitting for long hours: sedentary lifestyle is promoter of diseases. Human body is never meant for sedentary lifestyle. Long hours of inactivity or siting and working leads to many diseases of nervous system and other organ systems of body. Spine diseases are very common in sedentary workers. Cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, certain cancers have been linked to sedentary lifestyles. Ideally one should always take break and walk for few minutes after a regular interval.

- Feet should be flat and firmly placed on ground
- Computer screen should be placed in front of eyes: upper edge should be at eye level.
- There should be ample lumbar support from back of chair.
